Proust Questions: Chris Sadler, President, Allegiancy

By: Chris Sadler, President, Allegiancy

December 15, 2014

As president of Allegiancy, Chris brings a wealth of commercial real estate experience, outstanding relationships, and operating expertise.  Chris graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor’s in economics and a master’s in business. He started his career with Prudential Real Estate Investors in New York, where he became chief equity underwriter responsible for more than $12 billion.  Next Chris worked for Baring Brothers in London, where he was responsible for more than $2 billion in sales and acquisitions.  He then joined REVA Management Advisors, now Allegiancy.

1.  What is your idea of perfect happiness?   I’m tempted to say “sitting on a Caribbean beach overlooking turquoise water,” but that would be only work for a short time.  If I am not producing, I am not truly happy.

I am happiest — or perfectly happy — when I’m totally engaged in a project.  It may be at work, or sailing, or on my farm. But for me, perfect happiness = totally absorbed in the work at hand.

2.   What is the trait you most deplore in others?  Self-importance

3.  What is your favorite journey? “Any Way You Want It.”
Actually, my favorite journey is driving a sports car around a race track.   Back to the “perfect happiness” question, this journey requires total focus and engagement. Racing is exhilarating, and I get to test myself again and again.

4.  Who or what is the greatest love of your life?  My wife.  We have been together for 22 years, and our life has been an adventure.  She has always been game for my ideas.

At the outset, she was willing to chuck her life in London and spend a year on a sailboat.  Since then, we have lived in London, Richmond, Fort Lauderdale, a small town in Maryland, and now a small town in Virginia.  We are raising five children, and she still sees life as an adventure to be embraced.  How could I not love that?

5.  What is your favorite occupation?  I like solving problems, and I like variety.  So my current occupation is my favorite because it incorporates both.  If I can’t be a rock star or a Formula One driver, Allegiancy is where I want to be.

6.   What do you most value in your friends?  Oddly, this is a conversation we have been having at home over the past few weeks:  What makes a good friend?  To me, it’s loyalty, honesty, a similar outlook, but an inquisitive mind and curiosity about life and the world.  I most value these traits in friends.
